5th grade class has Civil War "field trip" at ISM!
On Tuesday, November 28th, the fifth grade class participated in a highly anticipated yearly event. Instead of leaving school for a social studies field trip, the “field trip” came to ISM!
Arn Kind, a former 6th grade history teacher who performs with a reenactment group, transported the class back in time to the 1860s. He was dressed as a Civil War sergeant and taught the students the causes and events that led to the Civil War. To view some pictures from the day, please see our media gallery album here.
In addition, they learned about the life of a soldier, his uniform and equipment, music during the Civil War, various battles, etc. And finally, students learned how to drill with wooden replica muskets. He also brought a variety of artifacts, flags, uniforms, etc. that students were able to interact with.
This is the 11th year Arn Kind has presented at ISM with teacher Jean Akesson's classes, and it is a memorable part of 5th grade. For more information about Arn Kind and other programs he presents, visit http://historicalexperiences.org/.
