Introduction
Learning a new language opens doors to diverse cultures and perspectives. The SABIS® Spanish curriculum is designed to develop students' proficiency in Spanish through a structured and engaging approach. From phonics to advanced language skills, our curriculum provides a comprehensive pathway for students to achieve fluency and confidence in Spanish.
Elements of the Spanish Curriculum
The Spanish curriculum is divided by topics
Phonics
¡Bienvenidas, letras! is a phonics book that gradually introduces students to the Spanish alphabet. Children learn to identify the sounds of each letter, join the letters into syllables, and form words, thus building the foundation for reading and understanding the Spanish language.
In the next level, students reinforce these skills with Jugamos con el abc, La magia de las letras, and Creamos palabras, while discovering and practicing more complex syllables, a process made easy by the SABIS® Point System®.
Short and amusing stories, exercises, and tongue twisters take learners through and enjoyable journey "from sounds to sentences" into the world of Spanish!
Language
As an introduction to the thrilling world of the Spanish language, SABIS® has created a dictionary, El Diccionario De Andrés, which is divided into four levels. These amusing books teach vocabulary and are presented by a boy named Andrés, who begins the journey at the age of eight years old and grows with the students who read about him. Each book begins with an introduction and has fourteen units. Every unit is enriched with a short, entertaining story where the vocabulary taught is shown in contexts related to students" lives and experiences.
To provide students with an enjoyable and smooth learning experience, SABIS® has also created four workbooks to match each level of El Diccionario De Andrés. These workbooks contain dynamic exercises that aim to enhance reading comprehension, help form words and sentences, and strengthen the vocabulary introduced in each unit, thus providing students with an opportunity to put into practice what they have learned.
In addition to the workbooks, children rely on further resources to develop and strengthen their learning of the Spanish language.
All the readers aimed at children in the lower levels have been recorded as audiobooks. Narrated by a well-known Peruvian professional singer and storyteller, the audiobooks provide students with an excellent opportunity to exercise their auditory comprehension and improve pronunciation and intonation.
El Diccionario De Andrés includes a set of songs that underpin the vocabulary from the units of each book. While singing, children not only have fun but also vocalize words in the target language while repeating grammatically correct phrases and sentences, thus enhancing student learning. Flashcards are also provided to promote the recollection of words and their meanings.
Anthology
The Antología series was created with the purpose of developing students' skills in reading comprehension and literary analysis, presenting them with new vocabulary words and promoting the ability to write different types of texts. These books present a compendium of texts corresponding to different literary and nonliterary genres while considering the level of proficiency of students and their previous knowledge. The textbooks present stories, poems, plays, fables, and legends, as well as opinion, procedural, and informational texts from authors of different nationalities. They are supported by workbooks that contain activities to enhance competencies related to communicative needs arising in the students" academic and personal environment and to promote literacy skills. This book series comes with flashcards to support the newly acquired words.
Grammar
SABIS® developed the Aprende las reglas series for native speakers and second language learners. These books tackle the different grammar and syntax topics necessary to learn the language and its proper usage at the beginner level. They include clear explanations, numerous examples, and exercises with answers appropriate for both self-study and classroom use. The workbooks provide additional practice for better comprehension and retention.
For intermediate and advanced Spanish learners, SABIS® has developed a second series that reviews, consolidates and goes further into the grammar and syntax learned in the previous one: Aprende las reglas. With simple language and thorough explanations-which students can understand either with the teacher's guidance or by themselves-these books offer all the rules needed to communicate in Spanish in a clear and efficient manner. At the end of this series, students will have become masters of this rich and complex language. Each textbook has its own workbook for students to practice exhaustively.
Writing
The ability to read and understand a text is as important as the ability to communicate through writing. This is why the Escritura series focuses on building students writing skills. The first book in the series, De Palabras a Oraciones (From Words to Sentences), teaches students to combine words into meaningful, well-constructed sentences. Students will then start using different types of sentences to form well-rounded paragraphs and short texts in the Escritura books. By the time students get to the final book of the series, A Redactar (To Write), they will be able to form a complete, cohesive essay. The Escritura series also highlights the importance of thematic writing adapted to different audiences in order to achieve mastery in writing.
