Benefits of Second Language Learning
There are plenty of benefits to knowing another language, but what about learning one? A wide range of evidence shows that the process of learning a second language has a positive effect on kids’ development.
1. Learning a second language helps kids focus
Children who learn a second language can keep their focus1 in the face of outside distractions.
2. It also sharpens their thinking skills
Studies from Harvard University2 show that learning language rules and vocabulary strengthens other parts of the brain, including those responsible for critical thinking. Learning a second language can also promote creativity, problem solving, mental flexibility, and memory.
3. Studying a second language builds general language habits
Second language students have an overall greater sensitivity to language—including their own primary language3—and a better ear for listening and reading4.
4. Language learning improves academic performance
Just one measure of the improved ability to focus, reason, understand, and communicate is overwhelming evidence that second language learning helps kids score higher on academic tests5.
5. Language learning increases awareness of other cultures
Learning a second language can be a child’s first and deepest introduction to other cultures6, geographies and points of view.
Like other areas of study, the process of learning a second language is just as important as the result.
