Join Us for ISM’s Magical Production of Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical Jr.

The International School of Minnesota (ISM) invites you to a spectacular and enchanting performance of Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical Jr. from April 3-6. This beloved story will come to life through the talents of our performing arts students, ranging from Grades 1-12. Audiences can expect unforgettable performances filled with music, heartwarming moments, and delightful surprises that make this an event not to be missed!

“Nobody but me is going to change my story!” This empowering line from the show captures the spirit of Matilda Jr., a gleefully witty ode to the anarchy of childhood and the power of imagination. With the help of her classmates, Matilda is about to teach the grown-ups in her life that “even if you’re little you can do a lot.” This production celebrates the resilience and creativity of young people and their ability to shape their own stories.

We recently spoke with our new Musical Director, Ms. Alexandria West, who expressed enthusiasm about this production. “Working on this production with ISM has been such a unique opportunity. Never have I gotten to work with students with such diverse backgrounds…it’s been really eye-opening to see these students come together under the universal umbrella of artistic expression,” she shared.

Notably, nearly half of the cast, including upper school students, is making their onstage debut in this production. Ms. West remarked, “Having so many talented students come out of the woodwork for their first performance just goes to show how much ISM nurtures the creative spirit of their student body. Acting in a musical is a huge commitment, and these kids have shown a lot of bravery and dedication to the craft in choosing this to be their first production.”

What sets this Matilda production apart is the significant amount of magic incorporated into the show. “Our tech crew has been hard at work to bring that magic to the stage. These are the kinds of technical challenges I haven’t had the chance to take for a spin in my 15 years of directing, and I can’t wait for our audience to see what we’ve done to make it happen,” says Ms. West. 

So, why should you come out to watch the performance? According to our Musical Director, “At the end of the day, Matilda is a show about making magic in the face of your own perceived lack of power. It’s about rewriting your story—making an ending that isn’t just good for you, but good for your community. It’s a story I know many of our students resonate with, and one I think our audiences deserve to see.”

As we approach the performance dates, Ms. West wants to express gratitude to all those involved: “Our cast and crew have been working so hard these last three months to bring this show to life, along with the help of our many parent volunteers and our wonderful staff at ISM. I want to thank them all for their dedication, their support, and lending their many talents to make this show the best it can be.”
