ISM Debuts in its First MSHSL One-Act Play Competition
The International School of Minnesota is stepping into the spotlight as it competes in the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) One-Act Play competition for the first time. This landmark moment highlights the continued growth of ISM’s performing arts program and the enthusiasm our students bring to the stage.
This year’s production, 13 Ways to Screw Up Your College Interview, is a fast-paced, laugh-out-loud comedy that follows two overwhelmed college interviewers as they encounter a lineup of unforgettable applicants. From wildly unconventional talents to hilariously misguided confidence, each character adds a new twist to the chaos. The audience can expect sharp humor, quick pacing, and an exaggerated — yet relatable — look at the pressures of college admissions.
“It’s special to be a part of ISM history and compete in the first One-Act Play,” said Charlie Diefenbach-Healy, ISM’s new drama director. “Theatre has been, and continues to be, an important part of ISM, and I’m looking to challenge these actors and actresses to continue the growth of ISM drama.”
Adding to the excitement, the production will feature a fun and intricate set design crafted to heighten the energy and elevate the comedic tension. The staging will bring the interview world to life in clever ways, making each scene even more dynamic and giving the performance an extra layer of flair and thrill for the audience.
Our students have embraced this production with enthusiasm, working hard to understand their characters and perfect the comedic timing essential to the show.
“This cast is fearless,” Diefenbach-Healy said. “They bring creativity, curiosity, and heart into every rehearsal, and it shows in every moment on stage.”
Diefenbach-Healy’s extensive experience in acting, directing, and theatre education has already strengthened students’ skills and deepened their appreciation for the craft. Their leadership has inspired the cast to take risks, explore their characters more fully, and deliver a polished and lively performance.
Families and community members will have two opportunities to see 13 Ways to Screw Up Your College Interview at ISM’s Leila C. Saad Performing Arts Center on Thursday, January 22 and Friday, January 23 at 6:00 p.m. for both performances. Tickets will be available at the door for $5.00.
“I’m excited to have the public see these characters come to life on stage,” Diefenbach said. “There will be a lot of laughter and creativity that the cast will bring to this performance.”
After these public performances, ISM will compete in the MSHSL One-Act Play competition, beginning with Section competitions on Saturday, January 24 and Saturday, January 31. Should the production advance, the State Tournament will take place on Thursday, February 5, and Friday, February 6 — an exciting possibility for ISM’s inaugural year in the event.
Join us in celebrating this exciting milestone as ISM brings humor, creativity, and heart to the stage. With a talented cast, an imaginative set, and inspired direction, this is a performance you won’t want to miss!
