ISM Students Bring The Little Mermaid to Life in All-School Musical
Students at The International School of Minnesota (ISM) are bringing the magic of Disney’s The Little Mermaid to life as they prepare for a vibrant spring production. After weeks of rehearsals, choreography, and collaboration, the cast and crew are ready to share an energetic and visually engaging performance with their community.
This year’s all-school musical features 31 student performers and a crew of 10, with participants ranging from grades 1 through 12. The production highlights the unique opportunity for students of all ages to work together, creating a dynamic and supportive environment both on and off the stage.
Based on the classic tale by Hans Christian Andersen, The Little Mermaid follows Ariel, a young mermaid who dreams of life beyond the ocean and makes a risky deal with the sea witch Ursula. Featuring music by Alan Menken with lyrics by Howard Ashman and Glenn Slater, the show includes favorites like “Part of Your World,” “Under the Sea,” and “Kiss the Girl.”
The decision to produce The Little Mermaid was led by ISM’s drama director, Charlie Diefenbach-Healy, who selected the show for its ability to showcase a wide range of student talent while encouraging collaboration across grade levels.
“The goal was to find a production that allowed as many students as possible to shine,” Diefenbach-Healy said. “This show gives us strong lead roles, a lively ensemble, and so many opportunities for upper school and lower school students to collaborate.”
That collaboration has been evident throughout the rehearsal process. Students have committed long hours to refining vocals, learning choreography, and developing their characters, all while balancing their academic responsibilities. Along the way, new friendships have formed, and a strong sense of mutual respect has grown between cast and crew.
“I’ve seen so many friendships develop between cast members and crew,” Diefenbach-Healy said. “It’s been special to see the lower school students look up to the upper school students as role models.”
Behind the scenes, crew members have worked diligently to help with sets, organize props, and coordinate lighting and sound, ensuring that each moment on stage runs seamlessly. The combined efforts of performers and crew have created a production that reflects both dedication and creativity.
“The level of commitment from these students has been incredible,” Diefenbach-Healy added. “They come to rehearsal ready to work, ready to improve, and ready to support each other.” As rehearsals progressed, the growth in both skill and confidence became increasingly clear, with students taking ownership of their roles and supporting one another throughout.
Audiences can expect a colorful and engaging performance filled with imaginative costumes, dynamic choreography, and heartfelt moments. From lively ensemble numbers to quieter, emotional scenes, the production offers something for viewers of all ages while highlighting themes of courage, identity, and the pursuit of one’s dreams.
“I would describe this show as a fun, heart-warming spectacle for people of all ages to see,” Diefenbach-Healy said.
Performances will take place at the Leila C. Saad Performing Arts Center on the ISM campus, located at 6385 Beach Road in Eden Prairie. Showtimes are scheduled for Thursday, April 9, at 6:00 p.m.; Friday, April 10, at 6:00 p.m.; Saturday, April 11, at 2:00 p.m.; and Sunday, April 12, at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are required for all performances.
